Displace Me!

On April 28, 2007, thousands of people around the United States will have a chance to experience the conditions suffered daily by civilians in the war-torn region of Uganda. Invisible Children Inc. will be sponsoring a program called Displace Me, where volunteers live 24 hours in meager conditions to understand the problems that plague Uganda's lands.

Last Thursday, Paul Vallas announced his plan to step down from his position as CEO of the Philadelphia School District at the end of the year, the latest in a slew of turmoil surrounding local high schools and administration. Vallas, known as much for his sweeping, progressive moves in education reform as for his conspicuous mishandling of the School Reform Commission (SRC) budget, seems to be only the tip of the iceberg for a problem that runs far deeper than executive administration.

A recent trend in cheap DNA testing has people across the country seeking out their family trees with astounding determination. A DNA test can quickly and accurately tell if people are related. Katherine Borges, co-founder of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy states, "people who realize the potential of DNA will go to great lengths to get it.

In a world full of poverty, warfare, sickness, and suffering, it is often hard to imagine that things could get any worse. But, as Pope Benedict XVII recently reminded the Catholic community, this can be a dangerous assumption. According to the National Post, attendees of his Palm Sunday Mass in northern Rome were met with warnings that Hell "exists and is eternal, even if nobody talks about it much any more.

At the start of the new season, Major League Soccer has begun a new campaign to completely revamp the league and make it a more popular, first in the States, and then internationally. The first step taken was expanding the amount of money each club is allowed to spend on players.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

James Murphy, the vocalist of LCD Soundsystem and the cofounder of DFA Records (along with Tim Goldsworthy), has had quite the career that you have never heard of. In his early years, he paid his dues in alternative also-rans such as Pony and Speedking. By 2002, he partnered with Goldsworthy to form the DFA, a record label and production team that often features several hallmarks of the post punk genre in production, harkening to the stark yet undeniably propulsive songs of Joy Division (note: one of this reviewer's top five favorite bands, to never, ever be removed or replaced), or Modern English on their first album.

For all of those future lawyers out there, here is a great read that will both excite and terrify you. Scott Turow eloquently describes his experience as a first year law student at Harvard in his book One L. The story proves that hard work does in fact pay off and that there very well might be some light at the end of the three year tunnel known as law school.
This campus, like much of the world, is filled with idealists, and a large majority of those idealists fall under the umbrage of the Center for Peace and Justice.

This Friday, the Villanovans for Peace will host a four hour rally for peace. This is certainly not a unique concept, and not a new idea.

Be it a taboo subject, bad memory, or something completely random, it is always there. It never misses its flight, no one in particular packs it, but it is there.

Last Wednesday, April 11, the members of the US Senate voted to remove a bill which put key restrictions on the research of embryonic stem cells. The ban restricted the federal resources of studies to only the stem cells available in August 2001. While the vote was won with a 63-34 vote, President George Bush has already threatened to veto the bill.
